The Kiss of Peace

The one giving the kiss of peace:

Kris-dos ee mech mer hayd-ne-tsav

Christ is revealed amongst us

Response:

Orhn-yal eh hayd-noot-yoo-nun Kris-do-see

Blessed is the revelation of Christ

In the Orthodox liturgical tradition, the ancient biblical practice of greeting has been maintained within the context of the Eucharistic Liturgy. This greeting reserved for brethren who share the common faith is referred to as the Kiss of Peace.

During the "Kiss of Peace," the church is actually engaging in an ancient, apostolic greeting that has its roots in the Jewish Temple worship. St. Paul exhorted the brothers to "greet one another with an holy kiss" on four different occasions (Romans 16:16; 1 Cor. 13:12; 2 Corinthians 13:12; 1 Thessalonians 5:26) as did St. Peter on one other occasion (1 Peter 5:14).

The greeting in Armenian is called "Vokhjooyn" or the "Kiss of Peace," "hampooyr srpootyan."

Armenian Orthodox Christians greet each other by putting their right hands over their hearts while inclining their heads near the cheek of their fellow believer, first to the right then the left, symbolizing the kissing of both cheeks in the "love of Christ", announcing "Krisdos ee mech mer haydnetsav" or "Christ is revealed among us". The proper response to this holy greeting is "Orhnial eh haydnootyoonun Krisdosee" or Blessed is the Revelation of Christ.

The Kiss of Peace is not offered in Church during the period of Lent.
